The Machine Learning for Chemical Engineering course aims to provide trainees with the basic skills for creating and analyzing complex datasets, applied to the field of Chemical Engineering.
Digital transformation is evolving rapidly, and the implementation of Industry 4.0 has led to an exponential increase in the use of digital sensors and thus the volume of data available. The emergence of Industry 5.0 reinforces this vision and requires the optimization of chemical processes through the application of advanced models of unit operations. At the same time, analyzing large and complex datasets generated by chemical engineering research is becoming increasingly necessary. Therefore, in recent years, data science, and particularly machine learning, have experienced significant growth in various multidisciplinary areas, such as chemical engineering, chemistry, and bioengineering.
The objective of this course in Machine Learning for Chemical Engineering is to equip trainees with the fundamental technical skills to create and analyze complex datasets, enabling them to develop and apply machine learning models.
GOALS
- Build and structure databases that are readable and usable by computers;
- Select and apply data science techniques to Chemical Engineering databases (laboratory or industrial), extracting the maximum amount of information;
- Critically analyze and develop machine learning models;
- Optimize the process in question based on the models developed.
TARGET STUDENTS
This course is intended for technical professionals and R&D managers in Chemical, Pharmaceutical, and related industries, as well as researchers in the fields of Chemical Engineering and related areas.

EVALUATION
The course will be evaluated using the continuous assessment method, which includes 4 mini-tests to be taken at the end of each module, as well as a final project to be submitted at the end of the course.
- ECTS stands for “European Credit Transfer System”.
- ECTS credits are a standardised way of accounting for the work developed by the student, including the presence in classes, as well as the time spent studying and with the evaluation.
- At Técnico, it is established that 1 ECTS corresponds to, typically, 28 hours of work.
This course is available in multiple formats, each with the same fee. You may choose to take the course in any of the following formats:
- Training Course: No evaluation and no ECTS credits awarded, requiring at least 85% attendance. At the end, you will receive a Training Course Certificate.
- Specialization Course: Inlcludes ealuation and assignment of 2.5 ECTS. At the end, you will receive a Técnico+ Specialization Course Diploma and the respective certificate.
